According to FAA Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) §61.31, a type rating is required for pilots who wish to act as Pilot in Command (PIC) in certain types of aircraft. These include:
These regulations ensure that pilots receive specialized training tailored to the specific characteristics of these aircraft, including their systems, performance, and handling.
For more details, you can refer directly to the relevant FAR section: FAR 61.31.
Did you know that you can combine your ATP checkride with a type rating checkride? For example, if you are a commercial pilot aiming to earn your ATP certificate along with an Airbus A320 type rating, you can complete both in a single checkride! After finishing the ATP-CTP course and passing the written exam, you would proceed to the Initial A320 Type Rating course. Simply inform your course administrator that you wish to combine the checkride for both your ATP and type rating.
This process isn’t limited to the A320—whether you’re pursuing a Boeing 737 or a Challenger 604/605 type rating, the option for a combined checkride is available. Just ensure that your examiner is aware in advance so they can prepare accordingly. Be ready for a more comprehensive oral exam, as your examiner will need to test your general knowledge per the ATP Airman Certification Standards (ACS), in addition to the specific aircraft systems and procedures.
If you already hold an ATP license and simply want to add a type rating, you can do so at any time without the need for a combined checkride.
Currently, we are unable to offer type ratings in-house. While we hold a Part 142 certificate for providing A320 type rating training, we are still awaiting final approval from the FAA. We expect to launch this training in 2025.
In the meantime, we work with trusted partners who offer type ratings for the following aircraft:
If you’re seeking any of these type ratings, please send us a request.
Additionally, we offer special training programs for light business jets, including:
We can provide training in your aircraft and assist with arranging an examiner and checkride for the Cessna Citation (CE500) and HondaJet.
